With angular body lines and sleeker proportions, the redesigned Versa looks like a whole new car compared with the frumpy version it replaces.
While the entry-level Versa costs as little as $15,625, it misses out on some of the more desirable features such as automatic climate control, blind-spot monitoring, heated front seats, and a fold-down armrest for the driver's seat.
The Versa's cabin is revitalized with much nicer materials and improved build quality, but the rear seat now has less room for people's legs.
A 7.0-inch touchscreen with user-friendly knobs and buttons is standard equipment, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility is reserved for the Versa SV and SR models.
The mid-level Versa SV and above add standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, but only the top-of-the-line SR model has optional adaptive cruise control.
The Versa no longer drives like it's about to topple over on an exit ramp or steer like the wheel is connected to thin air. In fact, the Versa now feels planted and refined on the road.
The Versa is still powered by a non-turbo 1.6-liter inline-four that typically pairs with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), but the base model alone has a standard five-speed manual. Regardless of gearbox, the Versa's engine doesn't have the juice to provide quick acceleration.
Every Versa is equipped with standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear automated emergency braking, automatic high-beams, and lane-departure warning.
During our first drive, we were very impressed by the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that kept the engine from droning under hard acceleration and nicely managed the power band.
For the first time ever, the Versa is fitted with standard 17-inch wheels on SR models. The two lesser trim levels—SV and S—have 16- and 15-inch rollers, respectively.
