The VW Atlas Cross Sport mid-size SUV is exactly what it looks like: a VW Atlas shortened by 5.7 inches and with two rows of seats instead of three.
Like the regular VW Atlas, the Cross Sport will be available with either a 235-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four or a 276-hp 3.6-liter narrow-angle V-6.
The Cross Sport will be available only with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The Cross Sport rides on the same 117.3-inch wheelbase as the regular Atlas and features largely the same chassis and suspension tuning.
Although the prototypes we drove were wrapped in camouflage, VW's China-market Teramont X gives a pretty good idea of what the production Cross Sport will look like.
Pricing for the Cross Sport should come in a bit below that of the three-row Atlas, which for 2019 is priced from $31,890 to about $50,000.
VW is hoping that the Cross Sport will help to improve overall sales of the Atlas by at least 30 percent.
The Cross Sport's second-row head- and legroom measurements are comparable to those of the regular Atlas.
The three-row Atlas will receive a slight upgrade and facelift for the 2021 model year to make it align with the new Cross Sport.
Some of the larger Atlas's shortcomings also are present in the Cross Sport, including a transmission that is eager to upshift to top gear and a sober-looking cabin dotted with more hard plastics than we'd like.
