Toyota solicits some help from Mazda to offer the 2019 Yaris (previously Yaris iA). Despite its affordable $16,530 base price, the Yaris is our favorite in the subcompact class, providing a lighthearted driving experience and an upscale interior.
The Yaris started its life as the Scion iA in 2016 and then morphed into the Toyota Yaris iA one year later when Scion went kaput. For 2019, Toyota dropped iA from the name and added two trim levels.
Despite being sold as a Toyota, the Yaris is really a Mazda 2 with a redesigned front end.
For the 2020 model year, Toyota will offer a Mazda 2–based Yaris hatchback.
The Yaris is slow—with a 1.5-liter inline-four making only 106 horsepower. It takes 9.6 seconds to reach 60 mph.
Once up to speed, the Yaris's light weight and composed chassis provide fun both around town and on twisty back roads.
The Yaris's interior is a more pleasant place than anything in the subcompact class.
Blue stitching and soft-touch materials make the Yaris's cabin feel more befitting a $20,000 car.
Despite a well-designed cockpit, the Yaris is sorely missing a center armrest.
A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the Yaris's lower trim levels, but the top-spec XLE model is only available with a six-speed automatic.
The Yaris isn't as spacious as some in its class, but its front seats are comfortable, and the trunk is adequately sized.
