View 2020 Bentley Continental GT V8 Coupe and Convertible Photos
The Continental GT's huge dynamic improvements have closed the gap between the lightest and heaviest models.
Externally, Bentley's eight-cylinder Continental GT V8 is nearly identical to the twelve-cylinder Continental GT W12. Both are available as a coupe or a convertible.
One small giveaway that you're looking at a Continental GT V8 and not a W12? Peek at the number of exhaust outlets. Eight-cylinder models have four exhaust outlets, and 12-cylinder Continental GTs have only two.
See? Two outlets per side = Continental GT V8. A single, large oval on each side? You're looking at a W12 model.
Tailpipe discussions aside, the Continental GT V8 doesn't feel much slower than the Continental GT W12, despite giving up 84 horsepower and 96 lb-ft of torque to that version's twin-turbo 6.0-liter W-12 engine.
The V8's twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 nonetheless produces a mighty 542 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque—good enough for a claimed 198-mph top speed.
Continental GT V8 buyers can choose from among the same dizzying array of interior and exterior color combinations, materials, and more as GT W12 customers.
The interior is stunningly luxurious, and now incorporates an all-new electrical architecture that powers a digital gauge cluster, a new touchscreen (which can flip into the dashboard, leaving a solid veneer in its place for a classic appearance), and the latest active-safety technologies such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. The old Continental GT's electrics dated from 2004.
Bentley is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year, so the timeline denoting the company's life span from 1919 to today is emblazoned on the doorsills.
Standard on the Continental GT V8 are adaptive dampers and a new air suspension with three-chamber air springs capable of delivering finer ride-comfort adjustments in real time than the old car's single-chamber units. A 48-volt electrical system powering active anti-roll bars is optional and helps keep the Bentley's big, heavy body level in hard corners.
For such a big, beefy car, the Continental GT V8 handles more spryly than its predecessor. The V8 turns in more aggressively than the notably heavier W12 model, too.
The V-8 engine also is louder than the lazier, more torque-rich W-12, and Bentley says the eight is its highest-revving production engine ever.
