The CLS53 costs $80,895 to start, or $7350 more than the mechanically similar Mercedes-AMG E53 4Matic.
Powering the CLS53 is a turbocharged and electrically supercharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with a 48-volt hybrid-assist system called EQ Boost. Total output comes to 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque.
A nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive are standard on the CLS53.
Weighing 4389 pounds, our CLS53 test car ran to 60 mph in a solid 4.0 seconds flat.
While capable, the CLS53's ride quality can feel brittle and unduly unsettled around off-camber corners or over rougher pavement.
Our example's $21,855 Edition 1 package brought Graphite Grey Metallic paint, a black leather interior with copper stitching, 20-inch matte-black wheels, carbon-fiber interior trim with copper threading, and an IWC clock in the dashboard.
The optional $1250 AMG performance exhaust system is a must-have extra that lends the CLS53's inline-six a wonderfully melodious voice.
A respectable amount of road adhesion allowed the CLS53 to stop from 70 mph in 164 feet and orbit the skidpad with 0.94 g of grip.
The AMG engine's electric supercharger and hybrid assist give the CLS53 excellent throttle response.
