Toyota ropes its ancient truck-based full-size SUV into the TRD Pro family.
Yes, Toyota still sells the gargantuan, old-school Sequoia [insert joke about ancient trees here]. And the full-size SUV is getting the TRD Pro treatment for 2020, joining the Tacoma, the 4Runner, and the Tundra in Toyota’s hard-core off-road lineup.
As you'd expect, given that the Sequoia shares its bones with the Tundra, its TRD Pro treatment is similar to that full-size pickup's.
The main tweaks include beefier Fox internal bypass dampers front and rear, 18-inch BBS wheels, and a front skid plate; running boards and a roof rack enhance the Sequoia's ruggedness, at least superficially.
The TRD Pro also has a different grille design with a cool TOYOTA logo, and it'll be available in few different colors, including an Army Green hue exclusive to the TRD along with white, black, and gray.
The 5.7-liter V-8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission are both unchanged, but a cat-back exhaust is available as an option for a more distinctive sound.
All-wheel drive is standard—duh—and it has a Torsen limited-slip center differential and a two-speed transfer case, the same as the standard Sequoia with its optional all-wheel-drive system (rear-wheel drive is standard on other models).
Standard equipment includes keyless entry with push-button start, a sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, and a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability—the latter being a new feature for Toyota's entire truck lineup, also including the 2020 4Runner, Tacoma, and Tundra models.
The Sequoia TRD Pro will go on sale later this year, and its price should come in somewhere around the mid-$60,000 range, sitting close to the top of the lineup, which is currently represented by the $68,930 Sequoia Platinum.
