The Mazda CX-5 crossover gets more luxurious and more powerful for 2019.
Mazda is raising the bar for its popular CX-5 crossover, although it's already a 10Best winner in our book. For 2019, the CX-5 is adding a new, more luxurious trim level and an optional turbocharged four-cylinder engine, along with several new convenience features and a revised chassis that now includes Mazda's G-Vectoring Control.
The new engine is the biggest change, and it's the same turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder found in the Mazda CX-9 three-row crossover and the Mazda 6 mid-size sedan.
In the CX-5, it makes 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque (that's if you use premium fuel; as with those other models, Mazda quotes a lower output of 227 hp on regular gasoline). It'll be available on higher trim levels paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and we presume it will be available as both front- and all-wheel drive.
Handling enhancements are thanks to the newly standard G-Vectoring Control system. We've detailed this system's benefits before, but the simple explanation is that it decreases torque output as the driver makes steering inputs, ever so slightly balancing the car as it enters a corner.
Now sitting at the top of the CX-5 lineup is the Signature trim level, which adds all manner of luxurious appointments including brown leather upholstery, extra bits of wood and chrome trim inside, ambient lighting, a black headliner, and a frameless rearview mirror.
Newly available features also come with this trim, including a 360-degree camera view and front and rear parking sensors.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now available for the CX-5's 7.0-inch touchscreen display, although it's not clear if it will be standard or optional.
Mazda also says it has retuned the suspension for a smoother ride and changed the steering geometry.
