Beneath its stubby hood, the XT4 uses a 237-hp turbocharged 2.o-liter four-cylinder engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is optional.

In our testing, the all-wheel-drive XT4 accelerates to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. That's not exactly quick, and the Jaguar E-Pace, BMW X2, and Volvo XC40 will show the Cadillac their taillights in drag races.

Cadillac's recent move toward simplified interior styling is welcome—some of its near-recent products' cabins have suffered from too many different materials and surfaces, few of them high-quality—and the minimalist thing mostly represents an improvement in these regards. Still, the interior quality leaves much to be desired.

The XT4 uses CUE, Cadillac's often-maligned touchscreen infotainment system. Only here, it's been updated and now includes a console-mounted control knob like that found in competitors from BMW and Mercedes.

For so little an SUV, the Cadillac XT4 boasts useful space up front for two occupants. The front seats can be upgraded with leather, ventilation, and heating functions. There even is an available massage feature, although it isn't as realistic-feeling as those from Mercedes or Volvo.

GM struck a deal with Amazon—yes, that Amazon, the online retailer—that enables Prime members to have packages delivered to their Cadillac XT4s. Basically, this functionality allows delivery drivers to unlock the car using a smartphone key, leave the package, and lock the car and be on their way. It's apparently of use for owners who lack secure entryways or porches at their apartments or homes. Actually, this makes a certain kind of sense.

Less sensible? The XT4's price, which is high for the segment and grows higher with options and fancier trim levels. It isn't difficult to price one beyond $55,000; for that money, you can have any one of several one-size-up luxury competitors.
