2017 Nissan Versa
- Low entry-level pricing, comfortable ride, roomy interior and trunk.
- Lazy acceleration, wallowy ride, cut-rate interior.
- The Versa is the lowest-priced car sold in America—for good reason.

Overview
Transportation doesn’t get much more basic than the Nissan Versa. Proudly claiming the title of America’s least expensive new car, the Versa feels every bit as cheap as its price suggests. Still, the subcompact sedan offers a cavernous back seat, a large trunk, and a comfortable ride, making it a prime choice for those who need inexpensive transportation. Just don’t expect to have any fun behind the wheel of the Versa, as its agricultural-sounding engine, numb steering, and listless chassis offer all the excitement of a documentary on the history of watching paint dry.
What's New for 2017?
For 2017, the Versa gets several modest interior changes, including a lightly reworked center console that adds redesigned cupholders and a second 12-volt outlet and relocates the standard auxiliary input and available USB port in front of the shift lever. Additionally, the mid-grade Versa SV is available with a new Special Edition package that includes a 5.0-inch infotainment screen, a rearview camera, and 15-inch wheels.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Versa is basic transportation, and its slow, wheezy four-cylinder powertrain reflects this. Nissan’s agricultural 109-hp 1.6-liter inline-four that powers every Versa model lacks both character and low-end torque. It comes mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission in the base Versa S or a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) in higher trims. None of the drivetrain options is particularly compelling. The manual gearbox is sloppy with long throws, while the CVT is lethargic and prone to making the engine drone under acceleration. The Versa also hasn’t a shred of playfulness in its chassis, although its softly sprung suspension does make for a comfortable ride. The Versa is built to transport people, not entertain them; driver engagement is nowhere to be found. The Versa’s body rolls haphazardly through turns, its chassis feels as though it’s made of papier-mâché, and its steering is overboosted and devoid of feel.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Shoddy build quality and a riot of hard plastics inside the cabin counterbalance the Versa’s impressively spacious and ergonomically friendly interior. Versa SV and SL trim levels benefit from a set of large, clear gauges, as well as niceties such as power windows and locks, a 60/40 split-folding back seat, and a keyless entry system. All CVT-equipped Versas come standard with cruise control, a feature unavailable in the entry-level Versa S. Despite its subcompact status, the Versa has a large trunk that puts to shame the cargo holds of larger sedans. Unfortunately, there are few storage cubbies within the cabin.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Versa S, S Plus, and SV models make do with a standard push-button stereo that features a postage stamp of a display screen. Bluetooth phone compatibility and an auxiliary input are standard across the board. A USB port comes on SV and SL trims. Adding the Special Edition package to the SV replaces the standard audio system with an infotainment system that includes a 5.0-inch color screen, Bluetooth audio compatibility, and a backup camera. Finally, the loaded Versa SL comes standard with a 5.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation.
