The 20 Coolest Cars at the 2023 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance

BMW used the Concours to publicly reveal its refreshed X5 and X6, but the updated crossovers were outshined by this elegant 1960 507 roadster that sat nearby. The sleek body, which was almost entirely hand-formed from aluminum, houses a 3.2-liter V-8 paired to a four-speed manual transmission.

Along with being one of BMW's most beautiful cars ever, the 507 is incredibly rare, with only 252 cars built over a five-year run. A high price as the result of inflated production costs scuppered sales, and BMW lost money on each 507 it built. This example was the last one to leave the factory. Today, a 507 will go for around $2 million.

Before Volkswagen took over in 1998—leading to the record-setting Veyron in 2005—the Bugatti name was the property of Italian entrepreneur Romano Artioli. The EB110 was the only vehicle to reach production during his tenure at the head of the historic brand, as poor timing with economic recessions in North America and Europe sent the company into bankruptcy in 1995.

The EB110 was powered by a quad-turbo 3.5-liter V-12. This Super Sport model churned out 603 horsepower, giving it a claimed top speed of 212.5 mph. The EB110's unusual design featured large headlights positioned closely together, a tiny horseshoe grille, and five portholes behind the windows that feed the V-12. There are only 139 EB110s, but this one is made even more special by Artioli's signature behind the side air intakes.

The Voisin C25 Aérodyne has a commanding presence, stretching nearly 16 feet long with an Art Deco style capped off by a majestic avian hood ornament. This French masterpiece, built in the mid-1930s, focused on aerodynamics and weight reduction, with thin front fenders necessitating the distinctive chrome support struts.

A 3.0-liter inline-six resides under the hood, but the real magic is in the cabin, where a dazzling pattern covers every surface save the dashboard and steering wheel. While Voisin built around two dozen C-25s, fewer than 10 wore the Aérodyne bodywork. Very few survive, and this one took home the Best in Show award this year.

This hypercar takes the unofficial award for the most extreme aerodynamics at the Concours, with a seemingly endless array of winglets and ducts. The track-only version of Aston Martin's naturally aspirated V-12–powered Valkyrie, the AMR Pro takes inspiration from Formula 1 and the top prototype classes that race through the night at Le Mans.

Compared to the standard Valkyrie—if a $3 million car can even be called that—the AMR Pro has a 15.0-inch-longer wheelbase, can produce up to 8000 pounds of downforce, and ditches the hybrid unit, still making a ludicrous 1000 horsepower. Only 40 are being made.

Four Le Mans–winning race cars sat together at the Concours, including this Ferrari 250LM. The LM was a coupe version of the 250P, which had won the iconic endurance event in 1963, and the LM entered by the North American Racing Team triumphed in 1965 at the hands of Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory.

Behind the driver sits a 3.3-liter V-12 with around 319 horsepower—shared with the 275P that had taken first at Le Mans in 1964—while the double-wishbone front suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and five-speed transaxle came from the 250P. Underneath the spaceship bodywork was a strengthened tubular space-frame chassis.

Supercars typically hail from storied locales like Maranello, Italy or Molsheim, France, but the SCG 003S was crafted in the quaint village of Sleepy Hollow, New York. Powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 pushing out 750 hp, the 003S is the brainchild of James Glickenhaus, whose company Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus specializes in competition-honed dream machines, like the Baja 1000–tested Boot.

The 003S followed a track-only 003C that competed at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Only three roadgoing 003S cars were built, at $1.8 million apiece. This black example features dramatic gold accents and represents the realization of Glickenhaus's automotive ambition that has since led to the three-seat 004 supercar and the 007 racer that podiumed at the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This D-Type was another one of the four Le Mans–winning race cars on display, taking the victory in 1956. The car was run by privateer team Ecurie Ecosse, with Ron Flockhart and Ninian Sanderson at the helm, beating out factory teams from Aston Martin, Ferrari, and Jaguar.

The D-type was powered by a 3.4-liter inline-six and featured a monocoque construction and extensive used of aluminum, advanced technologies for the time. The sultry bodywork and fin poking out behind the driver's head have made the D-type iconic, and in 2016 this example became one of the most expensive cars ever sold at auction, racking up $21,780,000.

Concours d'Elegance typically highlight ornate prewar vehicles. Although this Spyker C8 Laviolette was born in the early 2000s, its intricate, extravagant design meant it fit right in on the grassy hills. The second model from the Dutch boutique manufacturer, the Laviolette added a glass roof to the C8 Spyder that preceded it.

The C8 was motivated by a 395-hp 4.2-liter V-8 sourced from Audi, and only 55 were ever built. The quirky exterior design is accompanied by a flamboyant cabin full of quilted leather and aluminum accents, highlighted by the exposed linkage of the six-speed manual gearbox.

This unique car was a one-off created by Guido Cattaneo, an engineer and founder of C.A.B.I. Cattaneo, which built Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 dry-sump engines for use in the Italian Navy's manned torpedo boats during World War II. After the war, Cattaneo designed a chassis for the leftover engines and hired Carrozzeria Riva to create this luscious bodywork.

Many parts were borrowed from Alfa Romeo, including the brakes, transmission, and suspension, although Cattaneo revised the leaf springs to make them more compact. The end result was a lighter and more powerful car than the prewar Alfa Romeo 6C, but the purposeful stance and smooth curves are what make the "Serenissima" truly special.
