What the 2021–2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lineup Has in Store
The 2021 model year includes the new three-row L and the old two-row carryover model, while other variants are still to come.
A new Jeep Grand Cherokee is here after a long wait, and it arrives first in a new form: the 2021 Grand Cherokee L with three rows of seats. Jeep says there is much more to come from the Grand Cherokee lineup, so we've detailed the upcoming versions of the SUV that will likely be released later in 2021 and in future model years. Here is the current state of the Grand Cherokee lineup and what we think it will become in the near future.
2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L
The new L model is the big news of the moment, as it's the first (and only) version of the new-generation Grand Cherokee we've seen so far. It has a third row of seats providing either six- or seven-passenger capacity.
2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Jeep has confirmed that the outgoing Grand Cherokee will continue on for the 2021 model year. This generation has been around for a decade now and offers two rows of seats and either a V-6 or a V-8 engine.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Two-Row)
A two-row version of the new-generation Grand Cherokee will go into production later in 2021, meaning it will likely go on sale in the U.S. for the 2022 model year. We expect it will follow the same styling and offer similar interior appointments as the Grand Cherokee L (pictured), although with a shorter wheelbase and without a third row of seats. The 3.6-liter V-6 and 5.7-liter V-8 engines are also likely to carry over to the two-row model.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe (Hybrid)
The upcoming Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid (not pictured), also likely to arrive for the 2022 model year, will wear the same 4xe nomenclature currently used for the PHEV version of the Wrangler. We expect this powertrain, which will combine a gasoline engine with an electric motor and a battery pack, to be offered for both the two-row and three-row Grand Cherokee L models.
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT/SRT Trackhawk
The fate of the high-performance Grand Cherokee remains uncertain. While the outgoing SRT and Trackhawk models (pictured) will continue for the 2021 model year, Jeep has yet to confirm the SRT treatment for the new generation. We think the three-row Grand Cherokee L is an unlikely candidate for the SRT treatment, but we wouldn't rule it out, though the two-row version is more likely to sprout an SRT variant in the near future.
