• The BMW X4 is scheduled to return for its third generation later this year, this time as an electric model.
  • An insider posting on the Bimmerpost forum claims that the iX3 will be followed by an X4 M next year.
  • Production of the regular iX4 is scheduled to start in November, with the M variant following suit a year later.

The second-generation X4 left production last November with no immediate successor in sight. Spy photos show that an electric replacement is nearly here, which will carry the iX4 designation. According to a person claiming to be an insider and posting on the Bimmerpost online forum, the X4's brawnier M variant will follow the generic iX4, information that the poster says came from "leaks within the BMW organization."

The square-roofed iX3 launched in September and is slated to join BMW's lineup in the United States come summer. The production iX4 will likely share the boxier version's powertrain, which features a 463-hp dual-motor setup.

The M-branded versions of both the iX3 and iX4 are sure to be much more powerful. The iX3 M60 will be the first of the M-badged EV crossovers to arrive later this year. According to BMW Blog, that model is likely to exceed 600 horsepower out of a dual-motor setup. When the proper M cars arrive next year, they'll reportedly make use of a quad-motor setup and make more than 800 horsepower.

While BMW hasn't confirmed the iX4's existence yet, the official announcement likely isn't too far away. A spokesperson for BMW declined a request from Car and Driver for a comment regarding the iX4's production. We'll be sure to update you as soon as an official. announcement is made.
