• The Volkswagen ID.7 isn't coming to North America as initially planned, the company has confirmed.
  • The electric sedan was originally supposed to go on sale last year, but VW announced a delay in May 2024 that ultimately led to its cancellation.
  • While the the ID.7 won't be sold in Canada or the United States, it will continue to be sold in China and Europe.

Volkswagen has scrapped its plan to bring the ID.7 to North America. News of the electric family sedan not being sold in Canada or United States markets as initially planned was confirmed by VW, according to a report by Automotive News. A VW spokesperson reportedly cited the "ongoing challenging EV climate" as the reason for the decision.

A Tumultuous Launch

The electric sedan was originally revealed in 2023. The plan was to build the car in Germany and begin North American sales the following year. While the model launched in Europe seemingly without a hitch, its North American debut wasn't as smooth. In May 2024, VW announced an indefinite delay "as market dynamics continue to change." That indefinite pause ended with Volkswagen scrapping the plan altogether.

We drove the European model in France and were impressed by its athletic suspension, well-controlled body motions, and better-than-expected maneuverability for a car its size. Pricing for the U.S. model was never released, but it was expected to land between $50,000 and $60,000. Some U.S. VW dealers expressed concerns that the sedan would have arrived to slow sales, per a separate AN report.

The North American model was slated to launch with a single electric motor sending 282 horsepower to the rear wheels. A more powerful dual-motor all-wheel-drive version was also planned but would have arrived later. Range estimates put the ID.7 with the 77.0-kWh battery at around 300 miles on a full charge.

The ID.7 is still being marketed on Volkswagen's European and Chinese consumer sites, with strong demand for the car in both markets. Car and Driver reached out to Volkswagen for confirmation of the decision to cancel North American sales and will update this story when we hear back.
