- Stellantis revealed more details surrounding the STLA Frame platform, which will first appear on the Ram 1500 REV and 1500 Ramcharger that arrive next year.
- The platform will provide up to 500 miles of range in electric-vehicle applications and 690 miles of range in plug-in-hybrid range-extender setups.
- Stellantis also said those powertrains will provide a maximum of 14,000 pounds of towing capacity and 2700 pounds of payload capacity.
In 2023, Ram revealed its future in the form of the electric 1500 REV and plug-in-hybrid Ramcharger pickup trucks. The two trucks are set to be built on a new platform dubbed STLA Frame, and now Ram's parent company, Stellantis, has divulged more details about the body-on-frame platform that will support both fully electric and range-extender plug-in hybrid powertrains.
The platform is designed for full-size body-on-frame pickup trucks and SUVs and will be used by the Jeep and Ram brands. Along with the two previously announced Ram models, we think the platform could underpin future iterations of Jeep's Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs. Vehicle lengths on the STLA Frame platform will range from 216 to 234 inches, with wheelbases between 123.7 and 145.3 inches and vehicle widths between 81.2 and 83.6 inches.

The platform will hold liquid-cooled battery packs ranging from 159.0 kWh to over 200.0 kWh, and Stellantis is targeting up to 500 miles of range in pure-electric setups and up to 690 miles with range-extender powertrains. The EV models will be capable of charging at up to 350 kW thanks to an 800-volt electrical architecture, with the ability to add 100 miles of range in 10 minutes. In range-extender setups, a 400-volt system will lead to peak charging of 175 kW and 50 miles of range added in 10 minutes. STLA Frame will also support bi-directional charging, where the vehicles can send energy to another EV, back into the grid, or power a home in an emergency.
In EV and range-extender applications, STLA Frame will feature front and rear electric drive modules that combine the motor, power inverter, and gear reducer into one package. The motors will be able to produce up to 335 horsepower each, with a claimed zero-to-60-mph sprint in as little as 4.4 seconds.
For electrified applications, the maximum towing capacity will be 14,000 pounds and the payload rating will top out at 2700 pounds. Stellantis also says the platform will allow for water fording up to 24 inches. STLA Frame will also support the fitment of air suspension, and ground clearance will range from 6.6 to 10.3 inches depending on the model.
The STLA Frame platform is assembled from high-strength steel which Stellantis said provides strong durability and rigidity while minimizing weight. The center section of the platform is widened to fit the battery pack for EV models, and the frame rails are reinforced to shield the battery in the event of a side impact. There is also a full-length belly pan that reduces drag to boost driving range.
Along with EV and range-extender setups, Stellantis says the platform can support pure internal-combustion, traditional hybrid, and hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains in the future. During a media briefing, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares explained that although the company owns a 33 percent stake in Symbio—a company developing hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains—it is still open to partnering with other automakers to reduce costs to bring the hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains to market. However, he reiterated that Stellantis is currently focused on electric and range-extender plug-in-hybrid powertains.
The first two models to feature the STLA Frame platform will be the Ram 1500 REV and the 1500 Ramcharger. Although the pickup trucks were originally intended to go on sale by the end of 2024, Tavares said that the trucks would now go on sale in the first half of 2025. The delay, he explained, was due to Stellantis "facing a significant amount of workload" and that the company wants "to be very prudent in the way we validate the products."
The STLA Frame is one of four new platforms Stellantis is launching as it prepares for an electrified future. The company has previously detailed the STLA Large and STLA Medium platforms. More details about the STLA Small platform should come in late 2025 or early 2026, Tavares said, although the compact vehicles built on this architecture will be more geared toward the European market.
