- The 2022 Ford Explorer lineup is changing a bit for 2022.

- The 2022 Explorer will be reaching dealerships by the end of the year.
Ford is making some changes to the Explorer SUV’s lineup for 2022, with a particular emphasis on the sporty ST treatment. An ST-Line appearance package is new for the base four-cylinder model, while the V-6–powered, full-bore ST is now available with rear-wheel drive. The ST-Line starts at $45,845 while the RWD ST starts at $48,420, $2000 lower than the AWD model.
Like the similar package available on the Edge, the ST-Line is meant to look like the 400-hp ST, but comes with the same 300-hp turbo 2.3-liter four and standard suspension setup as other base Explorers. It has 20-inch wheels, a black grille, different badges, and dual exhaust tips outside, and red stitching and some other trim changes inside.

The Explorer King Ranch and Platinum models get the ST's uprated twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 with 400 horsepower; they previously had a version of this engine with 365 hp. Two new colors join the lineup—Stone Blue and Burgundy Velvet—and there are some other minor equipment changes.
The base price for the 2022 Ford Explorer sits at $34,345; in addition to the aformentioned trim levels, the XLT, Limited, and off-road-oriented Timberline models continue for the new model year. Ford says the 2022 Explorer will be reaching dealerships by the end of the year.
Despite being raised on a steady diet of base-model Hondas and Toyotas—or perhaps because of it—Joey Capparella nonetheless cultivated an obsession for the automotive industry throughout his childhood in Nashville, Tennessee. He found a way to write about cars for the school newspaper during his college years at Rice University, which eventually led him to move to Ann Arbor, Michigan, for his first professional auto-writing gig at Automobile Magazine. He has been part of the Car and Driver team since 2016 and now lives in New York City.
