- Ford posted a photo on Twitter of a camouflaged Bronco getting some serious air.
- We think it could be a higher-performance variant that could be called the Bronco Raptor or Warthog.
- The 2021 Ford Bronco won't arrive until next year, and it starts at $29,995 for the base two-door model.
Ford did just unveil the 2021 Ford Bronco, complete with six different trim levels and an off-road-focused optional Sasquatch package with 35-inch tires from the factory, but it's not stopping there. The automaker has posted a picture on Twitter of a Bronco prototype, possibly a high-performance Raptor model, getting some serious air. It made us reminisce about our long-term F-150 Raptor, which we jumped a few times.
"We’re always going to keep it exciting and elevate Bronco to new heights," a Ford spokesperson told Car and Driver. On September 9, Ford filed a trademark for the name "Warthog" for passenger cars, pickups, and SUVs. This has led some to believe that the higher-performance Bronco would forgo the Raptor name—found on the F-150 and Ranger (in Europe) pickups—and use Warthog instead. The Warthog, however, could be a larger Bronco model based on the F-150's body-on-frame platform. In fact, we have seen stubby F-150 Raptor mules testing.

Ford recently shut down speculation about any V-8–powered Broncos in the future and said that its 310-hp twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6 will more than satisfy customers' needs. As for the high-performance model in question, it's been rumored to use a higher-output EcoBoost engine—either a version of the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6, which makes 400 horsepower in the Explorer ST, or the 450-hp 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 from the F-150 Raptor. The latter sounds much more appealing since the Bronco's off-road rival, the Jeep Wrangler, might be getting a 450-hp V-8.
The 2021 Ford Bronco hasn't even reached customers yet, we haven't driven it, but we're already excited about its future variants. The Bronco starts at $29,995 for the base two-door model and $34,695 for the four door.
Sitting on the floor of the library and poring over issues of Car and Driver is one of Connor Hoffman's earliest memories. Choosing to attend the nation's top-ranked journalism school at the University of Missouri and graduating with a magazine writing emphasis was all part of chasing his dream of writing for Car and Driver. When he's not bragging about Mizzou having the best journalism program in the country, he's probably on a rant about Toyota trucks.
