Volvo’s flagship S80 sedan rushes into the 2015 model year with a brand-new engine and a 37-mpg highway rating, an impressive figure for an automaker that has never sold a gas-powered car with a rating higher than 30 mpg.

While otherwise a carry over from its 2014 refresh, the 2015 S80 T5 Drive-E is an all-new base trim that delivers an EPA-estimated 25 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, up from the base 3.2 model’s 20/29 for 2014. (Interestingly, Volvo cites the same EPA rating for the lighter 2015 S60 and V60 T5 Drive-E.) The new powertrain and commensurate jump in fuel economy tacks on $610 to the 2015 S80, for a new base price of $41,425.

In the front-wheel-drive T5 Drive-E, the 3.2-liter 240-hp inline-six is ushered out by a 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injected inline-four that makes the same power but tacks on 22 lb-ft more torque. Like all 2015 Volvo Drive-E models, the S80 T5 Drive-E has an eight-speed automatic transmission; automatic stop-start; brake-energy recuperation; and a selectable Eco driving mode that turns off the air conditioning and lets the engine coast during off-throttle driving situations at speeds greater than 40 mph.

The all-wheel drive S80 T6 AWD, at $44,875, returns with the turbocharged 300-hp 3.0-liter inline-six and six-speed automatic. Fuel economy, however, improves from the 2014 model’s 18/25 rating to a more respectable 19/28.
