This racecar, known as the Schmidt Special for its original owner Peter Schmidt, was designed to run one race only: The Indy 500. In that race, you run fast and you only turn in one direction, so to minimize frontal area, and to improve weight distribution for turning, the 400-hp Offenhauser engine sits in the chassis crooked and offset to the left of the driver. The car finished 8th in the 1960 Indy 500, on the lead lap, but never completed another Indy. It was eventually sold and raced in Europe — on tracks it was not optimized for.
