Overview
The Mirage G4 is a new sedan model for Mitsubishi, and it shares the same platform and powertrain with its hatchback twin, the Mirage. A low price, strong warranty, and options like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto boost the G4’s appeal as a budget-friendly subcompact. Fuel economy is another bragging point, too. Yet the G4 simply lacks the quality and refinement found in rival small cars that don’t cost a lot more.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Mirage G4 sedan shares the same 78-hp 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine with its twin, the Mirage hatchback. This engine can be paired with either a five-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Fuel economy is the G4's strong suit. With the CVT you’ll get an EPA-estimated 35 mpg in city driving and 41 mpg on the highway. The manual gearbox returns slightly lower figures, though it’s in the same ballpark. What the G4 doesn’t provide is much in the way of acceleration or driving enjoyment. Sure, its small size makes it easy to park, but the suspension feels unsettled over bumpy surfaces and there’s loads of body lean while cornering.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Despite its small footprint, the G4 has reasonable space up front, while headroom and legroom in the rear seat are adequate for adults if the trip isn’t long. The bad news is the cabin itself is a sea of cheap-looking plastic that doesn’t hide the fact that this is basic transportation at its, well, most basic. Options to boost its comfort level include a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, and push-button start. The G4’s 12.3 cubic feet of cargo room is average for a vehicle this size, but unfortunately the rear seatback can’t be lowered to haul bulkier cargo like the one in the Mirage hatch.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The base Mirage G4 comes only with a four-speaker radio, CD player, and one USB port. Thankfully a 6.5-inch touchscreen is optional and features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, along with Bluetooth. Considering the G4’s budget price, this unit is pretty straightforward and easy to use with only a few moment’s acclimatization.
