Overview

The Ghibli is Maserati’s entry-level luxury sedan, a mid-size model, based on the larger Quattroporte, designed to break the stranglehold that such German competitors as the Mercedes-Benz E-class, BMW 5-series, and Audi A6 have on the segment. The Ghibli’s sleek exterior actually leans a bit toward the “four-door coupe” design, though there is not enough Italian style to make it easy to forget the car’s shortcomings. Since its 2014 model-year debut, the Ghibli has grabbed only a small share of the entry-luxury market. Powered by a turbocharged V-6 coupled to an automatic transmission, the Ghibli, like most of its competitors, is offered with rear- or all-wheel-drive.

What's New for 2017?

After minor refreshes in 2015 and 2016, the Ghibli begins 2017 with new color and trim packages, as well as automatic stop/start, a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines, and an optional 360-degree camera. Other new option groups include an Advanced Driver Assist package, a new Sport package, and a new Luxury package. There's also a limited (450 units for the U.S.) Ghibli Nerissimo edition, with gloss-black Urano wheels, black door handles, window trim, and grille, and red brake calipers.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Maserati offers two versions of its 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 in the Ghibli. The standard model produces 345 horsepower and is rear-wheel-drive only, while the RWD and AWD Ghibli S come with a 424-hp version of the same engine. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 424-hp model, which can sprint to 60 mph in under five seconds on the way to a limited 175 mph top speed, emits a pleasing Italianesque burble, but the tight handling doesn’t go far enough in balancing that with over-the-road comfort—it can be a rocky ride. Roadholding is an almost sports-car-like 0.91g on the skidpad, and 70-0 mph braking is a very decent 155 feet.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Ghibli has seating for five, but rear-seat legroom is a bit short, despite the mid-size sedan’s generous 118.1-inch wheelbase. The well-equipped interior features rich leathers with distinctive Italian design (though seats will be known more for style than for comfort), with some switchgear too obviously from the Fiat Chrysler parts bin. The new Sport package includes a sport steering wheel and 12-way power front seats, while the Luxury package comes with a choice of designer Zegna silk trim or full leather upholstery, and 12-way power front seats. The low-volume Ghibli Nerissimo edition features a black interior with red stitching and red gearshift paddles, INOX sport pedals, sport seats, and sport steering wheel.
