Overview

The XF's dashing appearance and nimble handling have become staples of the Jaguar brand, which represents an exclusive club due to its limited sales. While the XF has a number of powertrain options, none are explicitly quick compared with similar rivals. The luxury coachmaker imbues this carriage with a spacious cabin and contemporary infotainment, but the leather quality and recalcitrant touchscreen were disappointing. Still, the XF is a rare and refined sedan that will inflate your ego and deflate your wallet.

What's New for 2018?

Jaguar added new engine options and more tech to the XF lineup for 2018. The XF S with a 380-hp supercharged V-6 remains, but there's an all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four that comes in 247 hp or 296 hp variants. There are also more active-safety options, such as forward traffic detection and forward vehicle guidance, as well as a new Portfolio trim that ups the luxury ante.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

An available 3.0-liter 380-hp supercharged V-6 is king of the XF powertrain monarchy. It accelerates quickly, but it's still slower than most high-performance rivals. A pair of smooth 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinders provides alternative propulsion, in 247-hp and 296-hp versions, depending on model. There's also a 180-hp 2.0-liter diesel that rules in fuel-efficiency. Every engine pairs with a great eight-speed automatic transmission; and torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive is optional. The XF's supple suspension delivers fluid handling along with exceptional ride quality that reflects Jaguar’s sophisticated image, and its steering adeptly transitions between low-speed lightness and high-speed heft.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Thoughtfully laid out, pleasingly spacious, and integrating several cool features, the XF’s interior has most of the trappings of high society. Entry-level models come with such features as dual-zone climate control, power seats, and touch-sensitive map lights. Moving up through trim levels adds items like heated and cooled leather front seats, heated rear seats, four-zone climate control, and ambient lighting. Unfortunately, the leather surfaces look mediocre and feel coarse. And despite the trunk having impressive volume on paper, its shape reduces the amount of luggage it can carry. A lack of storage in the cabin means smartphones and wallets will need other places to hide.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The standard InControl Touch system has features like an 8.0-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, and an 11-speaker, 380-watt Meridian stereo. Options include navigation, a 10.0-inch touchscreen, and a mighty 17-speaker, 825-watt Meridian sound system. Neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto is available. The touchscreen has adequate response time, but we lost count of the frozen screens, reboots, and unresponsive touch functions among several XF's we tested.
