2017 Hyundai Accent
- Comfortable interior, smooth highway ride, budget priced.
- Bumpy ride on rough surfaces, tight back seat, low on tech features compared to rivals.
- The versatile Accent provides good value in a subcompact hatchback or sedan, but it's due for a technology update.

Overview
The Accent is Hyundai’s entry-level subcompact, competing with the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, Chevrolet Sonic, and Ford Fiesta. Like most Hyundai models, the Accent comes with an above-average passenger environment at a very competitive price. Typical of this segment, the four-door hatchback version is priced higher than the four-door sedan variant. The hatchback is 162.0-inches overall length, 10 inches shorter than the sedan, but both are on the same 101.2-inch wheelbase, a generous size for this segment. The Accent Sport hatchback adds sporty visual cues and better driving dynamics.
What's New for 2017?
The only change for 2017 is the addition of a Value Edition for the SE sedan with automatic transmission, which adds 16-inch alloy wheels, rear disc brakes, steering wheel audio controls, cruise control, Bluetooth for phone with audio streaming, and a sliding armrest.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Accent's aluminum-block 1.6-liter inline-four drives the front wheels via a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. At 138 horsepower, it ties with the Chevy Sonic as most powerful in its class, though like most subcompacts, it feels sluggish until you get into the upper rev ranges. We estimate an adequate 8.0-second 0-60 mph time for the manual, and 8.3 seconds for the automatic. We described the manual as “half-satisfying,” with crisp, short throws, but a zero-feel clutch. An Eco mode alters the shift points for the automatic, while providing an upshift arrow for the manual. Even with the Sport model's suspension, the Accent's ride is smooth on highways, though the spongy springs struggle to control the car’s body motions in the corners or on crusty roads.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Accent’s interior is thoughtfully designed, with decent materials and quite comfortable seats. The base trim doesn't offer much in the way of luxuries, but the Value Edition brings cruise control, steering-wheel audio controls, and a center console with an armrest. The hatchback-only Sport trim adds a leather-covered steering wheel, upgrade seat material, and unique interior accents. Front-seat occupants will be comfortable enough in the Accent, but those in the rear will find tight quarters. Trunk space in the sedan measures a so-so 13.7 cubic feet, but the hatchback offers a generous 21.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 47.5 cubic feet with the back seats folded. Unfortunately, the Accent's rear seats don't fold flat, which hampers usability.
Infotainment and Connectivity
All Hyundai Accents come standard with six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio, with satellite radio and USB connectivity. Higher trims add Bluetooth connectivity.
