EVs to Compare to Popular Gas-Powered Vehicles When Car Shopping
Thinking about going electric? Here are some electrified models that are comparable to popular gas-powered vehicles.
Listen, we get it. We've all been driving gas-powered cars for so long that the shift to something that exclusively runs on electrons can be a little unnerving. That's especially true since there are so many unfamiliar makes and models on the electric-vehicle side of the fence.
We're here to help. We've compiled a list of some of our favorite electrified alternatives to familiar internal-combustion-powered vehicles. If you're EV-curious, these are some great places to start.
Looking at Jeep Grand Cherokee?
2025 base price: $38,290
The Grand Cherokee is a perennial favorite and a top seller in the SUV ranks.

But Jeep offers a plug-in-hybrid 4xe version that will do 26 miles on a charge and give you a taste of the emissions-free lifestyle. The Grand Cherokee 4xe is still a no-compromise off-roader and is a great way to dip your toe into the world of electrified vehicles, although its upcharge is substantial.

If you're ready to dive in, check out the fully electric Rivian R1S. It's similarly capable off-road but delivers far more on-road performance and interior technology.
Consider Hyundai Ioniq 5
2025 base price: $43,975
. . . We'd suggest you step over to the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The Hyundai is among the most fun-to-drive compact EVs on the market, with rapid acceleration and reasonably good handling. Had your heart set on a Forester Wilderness? Check out the new Ioniq 5 XRT.

The BMW X5 is one of our favorite mid-size luxury SUVs.
Consider BMW X5 xDrive 50e PHEV or . . .
2024 base price: $73,495
The latest plug-in-hybrid version, the xDrive50e, does a handy 38 miles on a charge. But at that starting price, you're not far from a fully electric iX xDrive50 after federal EV incentives.

2025 base price: $88,425
The iX is quicker, roomier, and even nicer to drive. Plus, it delivered 290 miles of range in our real-world 75-mph highway test. Yeah, okay, it looks a little funny, but we promise you get used to it.
Looking at Kia Telluride?
2025 base price: $37,585
This is a pretty straightforward one. Kia's Telluride is a top choice among three-row SUVs, and even though it's getting a bit aged at this point, it remains compelling.
Consider Kia EV9
2025 base price: $56,395
Kia has yet to roll out a hybrid version, but the brand's new EV9 is a fully electric alternative, and not just because it's one of the few three-row electric SUVs on the market. Both made our list of 10Best Trucks and SUVs for 2024.
Looking at Nissan Rogue?
2025 base price: $30,620
The Rogue is a bestselling SUV largely because of its value-minded feature set. Nissan formerly offered a hybrid version, but that was discontinued five years ago. While the company is promising it'll finally give us a plug-in-hybrid Rogue next year . . .
Consider Tesla Model Y
2024 base price: $44,630
. . . Anyone looking to buy before then, or looking to go full electric, might want to check out the Tesla Model Y. Neither the Tesla's styling nor its handling characteristics will win it any awards but, it's the most value-packed crossover SUV on the EV market.
Looking at BMW X3?
2025 base price: $50,675
BMW has dabbled with plug-in tech on the X3 in the past and has a new plug-in variant of its small SUV coming to Europe next year, but that isn't yet confirmed for the U.S. There's also an all-electric iX3 coming, previewed by the radical Neue Klasse X, but that's at least a year out, so . . .
Consider Audi Q4 e-tron
2025 base price: $51,095
. . . If you need something before then, check out the Audi Q4 e-tron. It offers similar levels of luxury and even more performance in a smooth-driving, crisp-looking crossover package.
Looking at Subaru Outback?
2025 base price: $30,315
Since Subaru's Solterra isn't exactly setting anyone's world on fire, the Outback is known more for practicality than driving excitement, If you want an electrified alternative to the Outback, you will have to look elsewhere, such as Chevy's Equinox, which has the same practical vibe as the Outback.
Consider Chevrolet Equinox EV or . . .
2025 base price: $34,995
If you want something that can roll emissions-free, check out the Chevy Equinox EV. The battery-electric Equinox offers solid range (285 miles for the AWD version according to the EPA) at a reasonable price.

2024 base price: $41,160
But if you're seeking for a bit more driver engagement, the Volkswagen ID.4 is worth a look—its quicker acceleration helped it win a comparison test over the Chevy.
Looking at Volvo V90 Cross Country?
Consider Cadillac Lyriq
2025 base price: $59,990
That's particularly true of the stylish Cadillac Lyriq, a distinctive-looking EV with a stellar interior and a decidedly relaxed demeanor. We'd stick with the single-motor, rear-wheel-drive version, which has an EPA range estimate of 314 miles and delivered 270 miles in our 75-mph highway range test. The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version, which has an EPA estimate of 307 miles, did considerably worse in our testing, returning just 220 miles.
Looking at Ford F-150?
2025 base price: $39,345
