Overview

The Focus ST satisfies performance fanatics who can't afford the track-ready Focus RS or want more power and practicality than the terrific albeit tiny Ford Fiesta ST. Regardless, the 252-hp Focus ST is a blast to drive and has the every-day versatility of a four-door hatchback.

Engines, Ride, and Handling

The ST's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder provides plenty of gusto for this front-wheel drive setup, easily spinning the wheels during an enthusiastic launch. Control that wheelspin and you might see 60 mph in the same 6.3-second timeframe we did at our test track. A slick-shifting six-speed manual is standard; Ford offers no self-shifting gearbox. Get over it. The ride is firm, but not punishingly so, and the ST corners like a dream—or at least as well as key rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI or the Honda Civic Si.

Interior and Technology

The cabin is aging but still practical and well-equipped, although to get Ford's latest Sync 3 infotainment system buyers are forced to buy the 401A package which also includes a Sony premium stereo system, a power sunroof, and Recaro sport seats. The optional seats, by the way, are aggressively bolstered—perfect for the ST's cornering performance—but may not comfortably fit all body shapes. Ford has an all-new Focus ST for 2019, but sadly it won't be sold in America. In fact, the entire Focus lineup will be omitted from American showrooms after the 2018 model year, so if you're interested in this muscle-hatch we suggest you act now before they sell out.
